What are you currently working on?
I’VE BEEN GETTING MANY OPPORTUNITIES RECENTLY. MOST OF THEM HAVE BEEN PUSHING ME IN SCREEN WITH EITHER ACTING OR MODELING, BUT I HAVE TRAVELING IN THE USA AND MOSTLY ACROSS SEAS TO TEACH WORKSHOPS AND SET CHOREOGRAPHY ON COMPANIES AND STUDIOS.
Where are you based out of?
I’M BACK IN THE PHILADELPHIA REGION
When did you start your training?
STARTED TRAINING IN 2001, WASHINGTON, D.C.
When did you decide you wanted to be a dancer?
THE SAME YEAR I STARTED DANCING WAS THE SAME YEAR I RECEIVED MY FIRST GIG BACKING UP AN ARTIST, AND I REALIZED THAT I COULD MAKE THIS A REAL THING IF I DEDICATED MY TIME AND FOCUS ON THE CRAFT.
What was your first professional job as a dancer? HONESTLY, OPENING ACT FOR B2K, HAHAHAHHA!!! BUT I REALLY CONSIDER BEING A BACK UP DANCER FOR ELECTRA RECORDS ARTIST “EL CHANEL” TO BE MY FIRST REAL GIG.
Who were your mentors and what roles did they play in your growth as an artist?
THE WORLD IS MY MENTOR REALLY. THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE THAT YOU CAN LEARN FROM, AND THAT’S WHAT I DID! I GIVE THANKS TO ALL OF THOSE WHO HAVE SHARED AND GIVEN TO ME AND MY CAREER! CHARLES “CHUCK” HAWKINS, ALONZO “SCARCROW” CARTER, AND KIRK JENNINGS DEFINITELY WERE THE FIRST FEW THAT SET ME OFF! THEN PEOPLE LIKE DON “CAMBELL LOCK” CAMBELL, BOOGALOO SAM, EMILIO AUSTIN JR, TERRY WRIGHT, ADESOLA OSAKALUMI, EMIKO SUGIYAMA, VINCE JOHNSON, RON “ZEN ONE” WOOD, AND JOE BUNN ENTERED MY LIFE AND MY LIFE TOOK ANOTHER STEP UP TOWARDS WHERE I AM TODAY.
What’s your favorite memory on stage?
THERE ARE SO MANY TIES FOR THIS ONE!! IT’S BETWEEN THESE THREE:
DOING A CONCERT IN SOUTH AFRICA WITH R&B ARTIST GINUWINE AND SEEING OVER 23, 000 PEOPLE ENJOY MY SOLO.
BATTLING IN PARIS AT “JUSTE DEBOUT” AND SEEING OVER 15,000 PEOPLE ENJOY THE RAW ESSENCE OF MY THOUGHTS.
BATTLING IN TOKYO, JAPAN AT WDC AND SEEING PEOPLE CHEER ME ON IN A LOCATION I’M NOT FROM AND YET STILL TREAT ME AS IF IT’S MY HOME.
Where is your favorite place you have ever performed?
THERE IS NO FAVORITE PLACE, I ENJOY THE OPPORTUNITY GIVEN IN EACH LOCATION. BUT THE MEMORIES I GAIN THERE SEPARATES THEM FROM THE OTHERS
What has been your greatest triumph to date?
BEING GRATEFUL, RESPECTFUL, HUMBLE, AND GIVING! WITHOUT THOSE I WOULDN’T HAVE A CAREER!!
Was there a particular performance that changed your life or changed you as a dancer?
I THINK THEY’VE ALL CHANGED ME TO BE HONEST. I DON’T TAKE THINGS FOR GRANTED AND SINCE I’M A PERFECTIONIST, I FOCUS ON WHAT IS NEED AT THE MOMENT THAT WILL MAKE MY FUTURE BETTER. SO WHEN I HAVE A PERFORMANCE, I GIVE MY ALL BASED ON BEING BETTER THEN THE LAST TIME.
Do you have a pre-show ritual or superstition?
LEAVE ME ALONE, HAHA NOTHING MEAN OR NEGATIVE, BUT I LIKE TO PLAY SOME OTHER MUSIC AND EITHER CHILL, STRETCH, OR SLEEP UNTIL I HAVE ABOUT 5 INS BEOFRE I’M ON STAGE.
What inspires you to keep going?
1.SELF-MOTIVATION! I CHOOSE NOT TO LOOK FOR IT ANYWHERE ELSE. WE ALL HAVE IT BUT RARELY USE IT WHEN WE SHOULD! I CHOOSE TO USE IT EVERY SECOND I CAN!
2. THE IMPACT I HAVE ON OTHERS! I CONTINUOUSLY INFORM PEOPLE OF MANY THINGS AND TO SOME PEOPLE, THAT’S ALL THEY NEED TO HAVE A BETTER CAREER, DAY, LIFE, OR MOMENT. I’M HONORED TO HELP OTHERS AND GIVE POSSIBILITIES OF A BETTER CHANCE.
Where do you see yourself in 15 years? Will you still be dancing?
LIKE AN OLD SEXY BEAST I WILL, HAHA. I CAN SAY IF THE OPPORTUNITY IS GIVEN I WILL BE, BUT FOR NOW I KNOW I’LL HAVE SOME KIND OF HIGHER POSITION THEN JUST PERFORMING.
What are your goals outside of dance?
I’M A FULL-TIME ARTIST. I DO THINGS FROM AIRBRUSH PAINTING, ACTING, MODELING, FENCING, VIDEOGRAPHY, ETC… TO BE AT MY HIGHEST SUCCESSFUL LEVEL WITH THEM ALL IS MY NEED IN LIFE!
Do you have any advice to give to other dancers whether they are just starting or in the thick of it?
DO IT RIGHT, DO IT CAREFULLY, DO IT %100!!
What music are you listening to right now?
CIRQUE DE SOLEIL, RANDOM STATIONS ON PANDORA, AND LOVE SONGS
List five inspirations.
LIFE, HUMANS, POSSIBILITY, EVOLUTION, AND THE LEGACY I’M GOING TO LEAVE BEHIND.
*Tyger B and I attended the University of the Arts together and were in the same choreography emphasis class held on Friday nights and lead by Curt Haworth. Tyger always came to class with some new idea or concept he wanted to test out and the style and movement was never the same. He is a jack of all trades in the arts and I am so honored he has joined me on this project. Thank you Tyger B!
